Column: Line Drives – Decision is step in right direction

[This is my column in The Commercial Review from today.]

Before moving to Portland, I was very uninformed about the goings on within Indiana, especially the sports landscape.

I was familiar with how rich the basketball history is within the state, especially with the recent resurgence of the Hoosiers within the Big Ten.

So when I moved to the Hoosier State the end of June, I took to my personal blog on the daily to inform my friends and family back home what I was learning about the area and my new career.

I remember when I first realized my eyesight was fading.

In Mr. Bernard’s seventh grade social studies class I had a difficult time seeing the chalkboard. I was even sitting in the front of the class. I could make out what the writing on the wall said, but I had to strain to do so, squinting my eyes, inching my head as close as I could without leaving my seat in order to read the board.

A week or so later I had glasses, which was something I wasn’t proud about.

I’m not one to say I am well-traveled. Coolest places I’ve been, in order: Dubai, New York City and Dallas.

I’ve driven in all sorts of situations in all types of cities. Detroit, Houston, Newark, N.J., the plains of Ohio and Indiana, the mountains of Tennessee and North Carolina and almost everything in between.

Lot of firsts this week, and it all centers around my first county fair.

The Jay County Fair kicked off Monday, and this the first county fair I have been to that I can remember (my mother told me last night that I had been to one before. I just don’t remember it).

But for all intents and purposes, this is my first fair.

And the first one I’ve had to cover for a paper.
